Friends and family celebrate the works of renaissance artist Paul Quarrington, featuring live music and theatrical presentations of his literary works, sprinkled with a touch of Magic and Sports. Host Barbara Budd will introduce featured artists including Joel Quarrington, Tony Quarrington, Porkbelly Futures, BidiniBand, Soul Stew, Baldini the Magician, Dan Hill, Melanie Doane, Joe Hall, Jim Cuddy, Anne Lindsay, and more!

Paul Quarrington is a Canadian artist who defied creative pigeon-holes to become celebrated in many disciplines
- music, film, television, theatre, journalism, education – while pouring out novels and books of non-fiction in Canada and abroad. Paul passed away on January 21, 2010; he was 56.

The Paul Quarrington Chair Fund

On Thurs., Nov. 5, 2009 at 8:00pm, the Leacock Museum National Historic Site is presenting an evening with three-time Leacock Medal winner, Arthur Black. The proceeds of the event will be the first to support the Paul Quarrington Chair Fund.

The Paul Quarrington Chair at the Leacock Museum is a fund started in 2009 to honour the contribution to the arts, especially the literary arts, of Leacock Medal for Humour winner Paul Quarrington. Each year the museum will designate a writer as the Paul Quarrington Chair recipient and invite him/her to visit Orillia and participate in the annual Leacock Summer Festival. The Paul Quarrington Chair Fund is established to offset the costs of hosting the annual designate including travel and accommodation. In this way, Paul?s contribution to the Leacock Museum and the Leacock Medal for Humour will be established as an ongoing legacy. Contributions can be sent to the address below, payable to the Leacock Museum ? PQ Chair, and are tax deductible.

October Events and Performances

On October 24th, a group of artists and authors is coming together in celebration of Canada?s Renaissance Man, Paul Quarrington.
From readings, music and one or two onstage surprises, there are also a number of special guests from the worlds of books, screen, stage and music.

Among the many guests to look forward to seeing, there will be appearances by Margaret Atwood, David Bezmozgis, Wayson Choy, Roddy Doyle, Alistair MacLeod and Nino Ricci. Performances by the PorkBelly Futures and the Quarrington Trio. And a very special reunion performance by the Rheostatics.

The event will be hosted by Dave Bidini, directed by Lorne Frohman and is being presented by the IFOA with BookShorts and the Humber School of Creative and Performing Arts.

In a serious effort to scout talent for a new line of sexy funny films, BookShorts sponsored the first ever Hot Type Award at Darryl?s Hard Liquor and Porn Film Festival.? The Hot Type Award was bestowed upon the filmmaker who most cleverly integrated a book or its written word into their film. Each eligible film was made during the 69 Hour Film Challenge. Congrats to the winner, Darryl Gold who wins $500 towards his next screenplay for a BookShorts film.

Quarrington Hosts Moving Stories Film Preview at BookExpo Canada

BookShorts, the seminal producer / distributor of media inspired by books, is excited to announce Moving Stories Film Festival, a 90-minute curated program of short films celebrating the written word. The films are being selected by Festival Programmer Paul Quarrington in consultation with prestigious Film Advisors, and have been submitted by artists around the world. From September to December 2008, Moving Stories will screen at public events hosted by film and literature festivals across North America.? Confirmed hosts include St. John?s International Women?s Film Festival, Ottawa International Writers Festival; Winnipeg International Writers Festival; WordFest: Banff-Calgary International Writers Festival; Vancouver International Writers Festival and Toronto First Canadian Place.? More host venues will be announced in July, along with details of special presentations organized by each venue in conjunction with their local screening.? A preview of Moving Stories films will take place in the BookShorts Lounge at BookExpo Canada on Sunday, June 15 at 2:00pm.? The event will be presented by Quarrington with Festival Founder Judith Keenan, and include authors and directors whose work is represented in the program. Programmers from host venues will be in attendance.? Moving Stories will announce the final selection of films in July 2008.

Moving Stories Film Advisors include: the highly successful Canadian film producer Robert Lantos; award-winning filmmaker Sarah Polley; author Nino Ricci whose award-winning books have been adapted for the screen; top literary publisher and media champion Anne Collins, and director / animator Gary Thomas, who is now winning major industry and public acclaim for his work in adapting books to screen.? Producer Judith Keenan of BookShorts fame was the first to marry the creation of moving pictures with the release of the printed work upon which the short film is based, and introduce both to the public in a context that supports the authors, filmmakers and in service to helping readers, or new readers, find the books they love.
