Bidiniband releases “In the Rock Hall” inspired by Paul Quarrington

Dave Bidini, the Canadian rock hero’s Bidiniband is releasing their album In the Rock Hall on January 24 via Pheromone Recordings.

According to a press release, the LP is an “expressive, white-hot rock’n'roll statement” with lyrical concerns that include “pirates, war, dating, travel, the Smurfs, engines, the waterways, and movie-making.”

In the Rock Hall gets its name from a poem by late writer Paul Quarrington, which you can read here on Pau;’s website (http://www.paulquarrington.org/friends/78/moving-stories-in-winnipeg/). Bidiniband will be promoting the album with a smattering of shows in Canada’s eastern half. For the official CD release show on January 28 at Toronto’s Dakota Tavern, they will offer “surprise guests, noisemakers, amp throwing, squirrel-toss, balloon drinking, dart poker and underwear bingo. And, one really good drum solo.”

Paul Quarrington – The Songs, from record label Cordova Bay has made the Top 25 of Vancouver`s CFRO 102.7 ‘WHAT THE FOLK’ playlist, under the banner of Singer/Songwriter for February 2011. Paul visited Vancouver many times during his lifetime in music, with the bands Porkbelly Futures, Joe Hall and the Continental Drift, doing solo gigs and doing performances he called `Words and Music,`where he would both sing from his own repertoire and read from his literature. His music joins that of Bob Dylan, Stan Rogers (Paul played StanFest on his East Coast Tour 2009), Sarah Harmer, Anne Lindsay and 24 others. Thank you listeners on the left coast!

A beautiful collection of songs by renowned Canadian songwriter and author Paul Quarrington. Upon learning he had lung cancer in May 2009, Paul set about living life to the fullest and channeling his creative energy into the completion of many artistic endeavours. This included a third album with the band Porkbelly Futures, his memoir Cigar Box Banjo for Greystone Books, the documentary film inspired by the book Paul Quarrington: Life in Music (BookShorts / CTV Bravo) and this album that would become his only solo release.
Paul Quarrington – The Songs will be available in stores on June 8 2010.

News of the Tribute has reached fans from London to Guelph to Hamilton and even New York City! We just received a donation of ten tickets from a lovely lady and her husband who can’t be at the Tribute themselves, but wanted to express there support and appreciation. Sue Hunter and her husband were on t…he East Coast this past summer, saw the Porkbelly Futures play in Fredericton and again in Halifax. They fell in love with the band, and just now this moment bought a block of ten tickets to help artists and young people who might not otherwise attend, come to the Tribute.

The Porkbellys, in fact all of the artists on stage have been rehearsing all week, and will continue through the weekend. By all accounts, the new songs by Dave Bidini, Dorothy Bennie, Tony Quarrington and Dan Hill are amazing, rocking, ribald and just plain great. Our actors are reading their lines for the presentations from King Leary and The Ravine, and Baldini the amazing magician is getting ready by opening a huge show for Haim Goldberg’s “Mentalism” show tomorrow night at the King Edward Hotel.

Porkbelly Futures on Stage for Quarrington Tribute April 13

Porkbelly Futures will perform at the upcoming Concert-Performance-Magic Show with the high-energy line-up of Martin Worthy on drums and vocals, Stuart Laughton on guitars, mandolin, harmonica, pedal steel, trumpet, and vocals, Teddy Leonard on guitar, Chas Elliott on bass, Megan Worthy on vocals, and Rebecca Campbell on vocals, percussion, melodica, and guitar. David Gray will also join the band for this gig.

The band will perform familiar Porkbelly favourites, plus “Are You Ready” with guest Dan Hill; it’s a song co-written by Paul, Martin Worthy and Dan this past year. The song represents a central theme in the documentary “Paul Quarrington: Life in Music” to premiere on CTV Bravo May 30, 2010.

Porkbellys Kick Off Doors Open

Doors Open Toronto kicked off on Friday, May 22 with festivities at the Royal Ontario Museum.? Mayor David Miller and host Mary Ito of CBC Radio One 99.1 FM launched the 10th anniversary celebrations that begin with middle-eastern music from Maza Meze, Lit City readings and a panel with authors Dionne Brand, Barry Callaghan, Amy Lavender Harris and Paul Quarrington, as well as a concert by Porkbelly Futures.

At the Porkbelly’s gig at Hugh’s Room on Saturday Night, we’re going to feature “The Great Depression,” our highly talented horn section. (That’s what we’ve always called our highly talented horn section. It’s just a complete whacky coincidence that there is actually a Great Depression happening!) They include Al Kay (trombone & euphonium), Vern Dorge (saxophone & clarinet) and Brian O’Kane (trumpet.)
